Warcraft II | Pre-Release Alpha Demo

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

This is an early alpha version of Warcraft II, a real-time strategy game done by Blizzard Entertainment in 1995. This demo from August 1995 was shipped to several PC magazines for preview use. It was not intented to be given to the end-user. Today, you’re free to try it, but Blizzard does not provide any support.

Regarding to the gameplay, it is still pretty close to the original game, but it already provides SVGA graphics, larger maps, a new fog of war and new units and buildings, even though you can use a few of them only. One interesting thing is that there are four types of resources: gold, lumber, oil and ore.

Creatures

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Creatures is an artificial life simulation designed by Stephen Grand and done by Cyberlife Technology in 1996. It was originally released for Microsoft Windows 3.x and Windows 95 and later ported to the Apple Macintosh, the Sony PlayStation and the Nintendo Game Boy Advance. You start with a bunch of eggs to hatch and care for your Norns. The original Windows version came with a floppy disk on which six Norn eggs were saved that could be transported into the game. However, they were permanently erased from the disk after that, so you really had to be careful.

In this video, you can see the game trailer that explains the basics of this game.

Obscure DOS Freeware Games: Talking ABCs (1990)

Monday, May 10th, 2010

Talking ABCs: A Day at the Beach. The Author (Redwood games) says the game was made before sound cards, so the voice all had to go through the PC speaker. Surprisingly clear for that old technology. This game used to be shareware, but now Redwood had released it as freeware outright.

Classic DOS Games says:
“Talking ABC’s: A Trip To The Beach is an early spelling game for children 2 to 6 years old. The game uses software called TurboSound to produce voice through the PC speaker, while the vast majority of games required a soundcard. There are three modes of play. In the first mode, the game announces a letter, which the player must find on the keyboard, and then an object that starts with that later is introduced and drawn onto the screen. In the second mode, the player can press any letter and the corresponding object is drawn to the screen, which the player can move wherever they want. In the third mode, three letters and three objects are displayed, and the player must draw a line between the letters and objects to make them match. Registered users received a copy of the game which displayed their child’s name, and could request a CGA optimized version which was much faster for CGA users. Additionally, they were promised a free game. Later versions promised a copy of Millions of Mazes, which may or may not have been the original free game.”
