Obscure Classic DOS Shareware Games: Kung Fu Louie Vs. The Martial Arts Posse (1989)

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

This is a hard to find DOS shareware game. It features play similar to many other fighting games of the time and had graphics that were actually top notch for back then. Too bad I can only see the story, my floppy disc which had the game is corrupted so the actual game portion doesn’t load. A shame really. This game is in the vein of Kung Fu, Yie Ar Kung Fu, the original Street Fighter and many others.

Try it yourself!

Obscure DOS Shareware Games: Pune (1994)

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

Pune is a game very similar to snakes, the snakes themselves seperate occasionally, giving more controlled players and occasional “out” but what really makes the game stand out is the 8 player multiplayer for the full version.

Wikipedia describes Snake as:

Snake is a video game released during the mid 1970s and has maintained popularity since then, becoming somewhat of a classic. After it became the standard pre-loaded game on Nokia phones in 1998, Snake found a massive audience.
The player controls a long, thin creature, resembling a snake, which roams around on a bordered plane, picking up food (or some other item), trying to avoid hitting its own tail or the “walls” that surround the playing area. Each time the snake eats a piece of food, its tail grows longer, making the game increasingly difficult. The user controls the direction of the snake’s head (up, down, left, or right), and the snake’s body follows. The player cannot stop the snake from moving while the game is in progress.

Obscure Shareware Games: Plague of the Moon (1994)

Monday, December 7th, 2009

This is a rare, very hard to find adventure game. The Shareware version (which is what I play here and appearantly sucked at) has nag screens, censored gore, little to no music and sound effects. The registered version (which is ultra rare) supposedly has a lot more features (including sound, music, full gore and no nag screens). You play Alucarda, daughter of a Witch who was burned at the stake. Your mother comes to you as a ghost and asks you to avenger her death, thus setting the story in motion. I probably would have played it more if I knew what I was doing back in the day. Overall it seems like a fairly good game considering it was made by just one person. A real labour of love.

Oh yeah, kind of messed up the intro video because I had to look after my Son again ;)

Obscure DOS Shareware Games: YAB Baseball (1992)

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

The best description I can think of for this game is that it’s a fun german shareware PC game that plays like the old NES game Baseball but has graphics somewhat similar to early SNES. The cost of the game to register is 20 Deutschmarks but the authour would accept half from elderly, students, poor and disabled. The game wasn’t exceptional in any way, but it was fun for its simplicity. Also, as a German thing the word Yab is pronounced “Jab”. The game features 2 real MLB team names but solely because of their colours. Blue = Blue Jays. Red = Red Sox. I let the game sit a bit to reach the credits then put it into demo mode to show the gameplay.

Obscure DOS Shareware/Freeware: Redhook’s Revenge (1994, Imagisoft)

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

This game is surprisingly fun. The sound and music are sparse, but it’s a fun interactive board game that can have up to 5 players battling it out at sea. Though originally released as shareware, Imagisoft stopped producing games altogether and released their educational type games as freeware!

Obscure Classic DOS Security Shareware Program: Eyeguard (1990)

Saturday, November 14th, 2009

Eyeguard is a very obscure, very strange DOS password security program (which means it’s largely innefectual in the era anybody could walk up with a boot disk). The shareware version only had the two messages, Eyeguard is on duty and Eyeguard is watching you, but the registered version supposedly had different avatars and you could customize whatever messaged you wished it to say. The reason for the horrible audio quality also is because it didn’t even use a sound card. It put the synthesized voices straight through the old PC speaker!
