Presenting more goodies from the 1993 “GCW” shareware CD-ROM, including some AutoDesk .FLI animations (such as the video’s intro) — which is such an obsolete format that I had to dig up an ancient Windows 3.1 program to convert them into .AVI video format — as well as many spectacular raytraced images, which was the state of the art for 3-D imaging back then. Raytracing provides a photorealistic view of computer generated objects in space, but takes up a large amount of processing power to compute and render. Many of these images were created using AutoDesk 3D Studio and date from the late ’80s and early ’90s.

Musical accompaniment is provided from three Amiga .MOD songs: “Go-For-It,” a.k.a. CAMBOD.MOD (a cover of the Kim Wilde song “Cambodia”), “Let’s Swing It,” and “Electric Church,” featuring an unusual real sample of a Hammond B3 organ with Leslie!

This is an early alpha version of Warcraft II, a real-time strategy game done by Blizzard Entertainment in 1995. This demo from August 1995 was shipped to several PC magazines for preview use. It was not intented to be given to the end-user. Today, you’re free to try it, but Blizzard does not provide any support.

Regarding to the gameplay, it is still pretty close to the original game, but it already provides SVGA graphics, larger maps, a new fog of war and new units and buildings, even though you can use a few of them only. One interesting thing is that there are four types of resources: gold, lumber, oil and ore.

NetStorm: Islands At War is a real-time strategy PC game, developed by Titanic Entertainment and published by Activision in 1997. Although a single-player campaign and tutorial missions are included, Netstorm is chiefly designed for online play, allowing for games of up to eight players. NetStorm takes place in the world of Nimbus, a planet whose crust has been sent floating off in to the atmosphere by the never-ending battles between the three god-like beings called “The Furies”, representing Wind, Rain and Thunder. The people now live on small floating islands, each with its own high priest; their only link to their patron Fury. The islands battle each other in order to capture and sacrifice the priests of their enemies to their own Fury so they may gain knowledge and power.

Activision officially released the game as Freeware in 2003.

Since it’s Christmas, I got a present for you: Descent II, a first-person shooter developed by Parallax Software and published by Interplay Productions in 1996. It’s one of the last games that Parallax developed before this studio was closed. Just as its prequel, Descent II uses a true 3D rendering engine featuring six degrees of freedom to move and to look around. It was released for PC MS-DOS, Linux, Mac OS, RISC OS, Sun Solaris, Microsoft Windows and Sony PlayStation.

Line Wars 2 is a classic space shooter Wing Commander/Tie Fighter type game by indie game developer Safari Software (who later went on to develop Highway Hunter and Tyrian). Line Wars 2 features 3 dimensional objects representing various spacecraft and objects in the game. You go mission by mission through the campaign story. In the shareware you can only perform 3 missions, from asteroid destruction to escorting a princess. The Music is on par with many Epic Megagames releases or Amiga game releases due to its use of Modular music. The game overall is pretty fun, though originally released in 1990, an enhanced version was put out in 1994 featuring high res graphics and other various enhancements (the version you’re seeing now). This game is actually still pretty fun now too.

Creatures is an artificial life simulation designed by Stephen Grand and done by Cyberlife Technology in 1996. It was originally released for Microsoft Windows 3.x and Windows 95 and later ported to the Apple Macintosh, the Sony PlayStation and the Nintendo Game Boy Advance. You start with a bunch of eggs to hatch and care for your Norns. The original Windows version came with a floppy disk on which six Norn eggs were saved that could be transported into the game. However, they were permanently erased from the disk after that, so you really had to be careful.

In this game, you can choose between various vehicles with their own stengths and weaknesses and drive on different tracks that have a lot of hazards you can run in. It has been released for MS-DOS and Windows 95.

This video shows the German retail version that SquarePulse got as a present once. In Germany, it was marketed as part of the Bleifuss series, known as Screamer in the world.
