Obscure Shareware Games: Battlestar 2 (1993)

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Again, a sequel to which I have no idea of the original. Battlestar 2 is a pretty fun but challenging game that plays kind of like asteroids or the ship combat of Star Control, but as a Gradius/R-type type design with enemies coming at you constantly. Sorry this video is so short, I was taking care of my Son and he’s top priority ;)

This game however is far better than the game Galacta, which I posted a video of previously. Not quite Major Stryker level though but definitely fun.

Powball (PC – DOS) – Gameplay

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Gameplay video of Powball, an interesting variation of the classic “Breakout” designed by Anthony Hamilton.

The story: “In 25th century, mankind lives a bleak life. Governamental and social stratas crumble, no longer able to meet the energy and material requirements of 40 billion inhabitants. Savage wars over the remaining pockets of resources threaten to pound civilization back into the stoneage. Thousands die every day, stinking up the atmosphere with the rank smell of disease and decay.

The discovery of an extraordinary crystal has given scientists a glimmer of hope.
It is the ultimate mineral, possessing a molecular structure so distinct it can be refined into any substance known to man. Alchemite is the biggest thing to hit the space pioneers since the California gold rush of ‘69.

You want to be a Rockhopper, one of the growing number of men and women mining this precious resource from the planetary debris of the nearby solar systems. Fame and fortune beckon to all rockhoppers, but deep down inside, your soul realizes the one true prize…

…life.”

Powball was originally released to the public as shareware on the 22nd of August 1996, and subsequently re-released by Spectrum Pacific Publishing and Webfoot Games on the the 3rd of June 1997. On 5th of July 2000, Powball was released as Freeware; this means it is free to play and distribute at your leisure but the license agreements remain. In other words, this product remains the copyright of Anthony Hamilton. It may not be sold for profit.

======================================

The game was run on DOSBox 0.72 and recorded with Camtasia recorder, since I forgot to install the ZMBV codec, which comes with together with DOSBox… Oops. =P

Obscure Shareware Game: La Cosa Nostra (1994)

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

From a shareware compilation of mine. The framerate wasn’t too great and I could not find a way to strafe. You pick up items with the enter key. This game looks like it was made using the Pie in the Sky software 3d GCS (Game Creation System). I used to own that program too but a friend lost the disks so long ago. Anyway, this game La Cosa Nostra is a mobster themed FPS game with the first episode as shareware, registered users get the second episode sent to them. I really know very little else about it. The Second level of the game (which I was too lazy to get to because I didn’t feel like putting any effort into getting to) features the Terminator movie theme for some reason… suggesting this game probably just uses midi music gathered from around the 1994 net.

Demo for Developers: Video Conferencing to IP Phones, PDAs

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

This video demonstrates a simultaneous voice and video conferencing call to a wireless PDA. It illustrates video conferencing and video streaming to 3G mobile devices. Developers demonstrate how to communicate by voice and see each other by video while sharing videos and other documents. This is accomplished with fully converged voice and video on a single DSP. See how Texas Instruments and Surf Communication Solutions have partnered to create this media processing engine.

Obscure Shareware DOS Game: Highway Hunter (1994)

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

Highway Hunter is a scrolling driving shooter by Safari Software (Makers of Line Wars 2 and Tyrian). It plays similar to a many space shooters like Major Stryker or Raptor: Call of the Shadows, except you’re confined to a narrow banded road. It also has superficial resemblances to Spy Hunter (and a coincidental name similarity). At this point, Safari teamed up with Epic Megagames to distribute their games more easily, but this game is still not as well known as Tyrian. As you drive around shooting enemies, you pick up upgrades for your weapons and 3 different types of shields that protect you or do damage to enemies.

Story from the game itself:
“Five years earlier Axis of Allied Nations gained control over Earth. They immediately placed up terraformers to make life more hospitable for themselves. The downside? It is killing the human race. You were once a rebel, but you got caught and has been used as an engineer to build a new weapon for the aliens. The MASTER (Multi-Attack Super Turbo Energy Ranger). One day when oppurtunity strikes, you steal the MASTER and escape. Now it is time to do some serious payback.”

Obscure DOS Shareware Game: War Wizard (1993)

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

I always wanted to try this game. The only copy I could ever find was on a shareware compilation and the game seems bugged all to heck because it refuses to work past putting your character name in. The end of this video is where it crashes!

Wikipedia Says: WarWizard was a fantasy computer role-playing game that was released as shareware in 1993, first for Amiga, then ported to Ms-Dos for IBM-compatible computers. It was developed by MicroGenesis, a small company founded by Brad McQuaid and Steve Clover in 1989. Today, the game is most notable as the commercial start for McQuaid, Clover, and artist Milo Cooper, who would later work together at Sony Online Entertainment on EverQuest and at Sigil Games Online on Vanguard: Saga of Heroes.
The player acts as a “WarWizard”, a powerful magic-using character that fights and completes quests. WarWizard features VGA graphics and sound effects, but touted greater emphasis on gameplay than on anything else.
One notable feature of the game was its combat mode, which featured the ability to target specific parts of an opponent’s body, hampering movement or disabling the opponents altogether, rendering them unable to flee from the battle or to retaliate. The same thing could also happen to the player, WarWizard, himself.
Today, the game is mostly unknown except to a few fans and appears impossible to find anywhere on the net. Even the official site, which became unavailable from September 2007 (possibly connected to Sony Online Entertainment’s takeover of Sigil Games Online on 15 May, 2007), offered only a shareware version of the game for download. According to Brad McQuaid, the full version seems to be misplaced and nowhere to be found.
Few people mentioned to have ordered the full Ms-Dos/PC Version of WarWizard at the time, but never received any answer or the game. It appears that the game has been discarded by its makers without any chances ever for the full version to become available today for anyone.

Obscure DOS Shareware Games: Framed (1995)

Friday, February 5th, 2010

I honestly could not for the life of me figure out what I had to do. I tried the various controls the game had listed, most likely it would have let me do something if I tried more combinations of keys. I can find no record of it online. It’s from an old Shareware compilation disc of mine. It appears to be a side scroller where you solve puzzles and try to prove your innocence from some sort of crime. Very interesting and odd… the protagonist is dressed like a typical gumshoe.
